Day 28 – 1/29/11

A beautiful day greeted us on our first full day in Staniel Cay.  Dennis and Mary were going to move to the marina, but we decided that we would stay put.  We loaded up the trash, a gas can, and two water cans, and headed to the marina.  While we were there Dennis and Mary pulled in, and we helped them secure their boat.  After offloading the water and gas, we dingyed over to the grotto that was used as a setting in the film Thunderball.  As it was still a chilly 75, we decided to postpone the water investigation until tomorrow.

Back at the marina, we tied up our dingy to Dennis and Mary’s boat and ventured off to explore the island.  We found the airport and BTC, but never found the market and other stores until later in our journey.  When we reached the bread store, we ran into Dennis and Mary, who had just bought the last loaf.  Dennis relayed that when they went into the “store”, it turned out to be a resident’s kitchen.  We wandered through the two markets and eventually back to the marina.  We decided that the four of us would have lunch and a couple of drinks.  The food was excellent, and we will probably be back tomorrow.

Before returning to our boat, we met a couple from Belgium who had just purchased a new Gemini.  They are sailing to the Dominican Republic, and leaving the boat there before returning to Belgium.  They offered us aboard to view the boat, and the new boats are nice.  His only complaint was the gel coat, which has been an issue with the boats for some time.  Their other problem was their new dingy engine ran once and would not run again, and they wanted to go to the grotto.  I offered to take them to the grotto tomorrow at low tide, since they we so gracious to let us view the new Gem.
Back at our boat we did some housekeeping and relaxing.  No dinner tonight since we had a large lunch.  We showered and afterwards were presented with a gorgeous sunset.
