Day 27 – 1/28/11

Off we go to another island, Staniel Cay, leaving our mooring and weaving our way through the boats that are still moored.   To date the land and sea park is the highlight of the trip.  As we turned south, both Dennis and I launched our jibs and shortly after the mains came out.  With the lazy jacks we turned into the wind, which left us far behind.  The new main worked as the sail maker had described and we were turning mid 6’s with 10 – 12 knots of wind.  The new sail will take some time to understand how to get the most out of it, and when I return to the states, I will call the sail maker for some advice.
During our sail the wind switched so that it was almost behind us.  As I eased the main out as far as it would go, it virtually covered the jib, so that I furled it until it was on the starboard side and then let it out again.  In the following 10 – 12 knots we hit 7.2, faster down the waves.
We stowed the sails for the last two miles into Staniel Cay.  Dennis selected a protected area, and after setting in I decided that between the number of boats and tidal swings that we would move elsewhere.  We upped anchor that was set so well that it took three attempts to retrieve it, and motored between the two islands to another anchorage.  The nearest boat was over 300 yards away.  We showered and ate, and settled in for the night.  We had opened the hatches and ports, but with the wind and coolness of the night, we left them open only a crack.  Unfortunately, between the tides and the wind, the swell wrapping around the point hit us broadside constantly through the night making it a less than restful.
